Welcome to the colony of New York (1626)The colony of New York (known as New Amsterdam) was founded in the year 1626 by Peter Minuit, and various other colonists on Manhattan Island, at the time it was a part of the Middle Colonies. Following the founding of the colony, the Dutch lose New Amsterdam in 1664 to the British. The name New Amsterdam is then replaced by "New York" from the Duke of York. But in 1788 the Colony became known as a state, New York.
